Laser Skin Resurfacing: Giving Your Skin a Fresh Start
Laser skin resurfacing has emerged as one of the most exciting fields in dermatology in recent years. Thanks to some amazing technological advances, lasers can now safely and effectively rejuvenate age- and sun-damaged skin, as well as certain types of skin disorders, such as acne and psoriasis. They're also used to minimize or remove tattoos, birthmarks, unsightly blood vessels ("spider veins"), unwanted body hair, scars, and more.
How Lasers Work
Lasers use pulses of high-energy light waves to target and vaporize damaged skin cells with minimal trauma to surrounding, healthy cells. There are many different types of lasers. Each is used for a specific purpose. Two general categories are ablative and non-ablative. Ablative lasers treat the epidermis, or upper layer of the skin, helping to reduce fine lines and other superficial skin imperfections. Non-ablative lasers work more deeply within the skin, in the dermis. By reaching the dermis (without harming the epidermis) non-ablative lasers are able to destroy blood vessels associated with spider veins and birthmarks, as well as the sebaceous glands involved in acne flare-ups. New lasers such as the SmartSkin and Fraxel lasers are also improving skin in many patients.
The Patients Guide® to Laser Skin Resurfacing
Although laser skin resurfacing is a non-invasive procedure, you still need to understand it thoroughly before having the treatment. Also, with so many different kinds of laser treatments out there, you need to have an informed discussion with your physician about which treatment is right for your particular skin needs. We've created this website to help you have that informed discussion. The content here is edited and published by some of the leading cosmetic physicians in the world. As a Patient's GuideĀ® website, we're committed to the highest standards of medical accuracy and review. We hope this information is helpful, and we look forward to your feedback. Please do note that no website, advertising, or opinion can replace consultation with an expert physician. Before making any decision on treatment, it's advisable to speak with your doctor first.
